Newfoundlanders say that "you don't visit here for the weather". And it's very true, with the province mostly experiencing gray, drizzly days. Even during the summer weeks, rainy days are cold. You need to dress accordingly, with waterproof shoes and a raincoat.
With its rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning scenery, St. John's offers plenty of experiences not to be missed, even when the skies are gloomy. Whether you're a local or a visitor, there's always something to do indoors that will make you appreciate this charming city.
Embrace the Arts at The Rooms
One of the must-visit rainy day spots in St. John's is The Rooms, a cultural facility that combines the provincial museum, art gallery, and archives all under one roof. This stunning building, which overlooks the harbor, provides a fascinating insight into Newfoundland and Labrador's history and culture.
Inside, you can explore diverse exhibits that showcase both historical artifacts and contemporary art. Make sure to check out the local artwork and the artifacts from the region's maritime history. For visitors with an interest in the arts, The Rooms often hosts workshops and events, making it an excellent spot to immerse yourself in local culture.
While you're there, don't forget to visit the on-site café, which serves delightful local cuisine with a great view of the harbor (if it's not extremely foggy). You can enjoy a hot chowder and traditional salt cod cakes.
Explore the Historic Quidi Vidi Village
Even on rainy days, charming Quidi Vidi Village is worth a visit. Nestled just a short drive from downtown St. John's, this picturesque fishing village is known for its colorful houses and stunning views.
Take a short stroll along the boardwalk, where you can enjoy the sights of this colorful fishing village. Warm up at the Quidi Vidi Brewery with a tasting of locally crafted beers. The Iceberg beer is very popular, as it's infused with iceberg water. Enjoy some wings or fish and chips. They often offer live music and other events.
If you're looking for a cozy place for souvenirs, visit The Quidi Vidi Artisan Studios, where you can pick up a unique craft from local artisans.
Delve into St. John's History
Historically significant and visually stunning, Signal Hill National Historic Site should be on your itinerary. The Cabot Tower overlooks the city and the harbor, and has been an essential part of St. John's defense since the 17th century.
You can explore the visitor center and learn about the history of the site through guided tours and exhibits. The exhibits in the visitor center provide a comprehensive look into the historical significance of the landmark from the comfort of an indoor space.
The hike up to Signal Hill is strenuous, but worth it. You can also take a short hike from the top of Signal Hill to Quidi Vidi village. Make sure to wear appropriate footwear as you roam the grounds.
Indulge in Local Cuisine
What better way to spend a rainy day than by indulging in the delicious local cuisine that St. John's has to offer? The city is known for its seafood, with local restaurants serving up dishes made from fresh catches.
Head to the Yellow Belly, where you can try Newfoundland-style dishes that highlight local flavors and pair them with local beers. From seafood chowder to burgers, every meal is an experience. The extensive menu is a crowd pleaser.
If you're in the mood for something sweet, don't miss out on trying treats from the Newfoundland Chocolate Company, a local favorite!
Discover Unique Shops and Boutiques
St. John's is home to a variety of quaint shops that make for a perfect indoor activity on a rainy day. There is only a short walk between shops. From bookstores to vintage clothing stores, you can find a bit of everything here.
A great starting point is Water Street, known for its eclectic mix of shops. The Bee's Knees and Johnny Ruth are some of my favorites. Stop at the Jumping Bean to warm up with a cup of delicious coffee.
Continue on Duckworth's Street for more shopping at the Posey Row. You can spend a while here, browsing several levels of local crafts. I also love the Crafted Treasures shop, it's full of handmade gifts.
Another rainy day favorite of mine is the Mad Catter Cafe. Here you can enjoy quality time with cats that are up for adoption. Grab a coffee and a touton while you lounge around with the cats.
Rainy days can be a wonderful opportunity for exploration and discovery, tucked away in charming shops.
Enjoy Indoor Recreation
The Majestic Theatre offers entertaining productions in a newly renovated historic building. From live music to trivia, you can spend a fun evening inside. Make sure you only purchase tickets through their website. Enjoy a pre-show treat and coffee at their Theater Bar and Cafe. Or stay for a cocktail here with friends after the show.
Experience the Nightlife
The nightlife in St. John's comes alive on George Street. Many pubs and bars offer live music that you can enjoy while staying warm and dry indoors. Local acts often play traditional Newfoundland music, ensuring an authentic cultural experience.
George Street is well-known for its vibrant atmosphere and party scene. Christian's Pub and The Martini Bar provide a wonderful backdrop for an evening filled with music, laughter, and new friends. If you haven't yet, book your screech-in at Christian's. It's a fun way to become an honorary Newfoundlander.
Indoor events like quiz nights, karaoke, and themed parties often take place in various venues, giving you ample options for a fun night out, irrespective of the weather.
Indoor Markets and Artisan Fairs
Rainy days can also be a great time to explore indoor markets and artisan fairs that pop up in St. John's throughout the year. Locations such as The St. John's Farmers' Market offer a delightful selection of fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts that perfectly represent the local culture. The Market is also inclusive of the other local cultures, so you get to enjoy various cuisines and crafts.
Shopping local not only supports the community but allows you to take home a piece of St. John's—all while enjoying the vibrant atmosphere these markets provide. Be sure to check for vendor schedules and special events during your visit to make the most of the experience.
